Student engagement is a key priority of the College of Health and Human Development, where opportunities outside the classroom bolster the student experience overall, as well as create opportunities for students to apply their learning to real world settings. Evidence has shown that engaged students are successful students—in their careers, in their communities, and as citizens.

Student Engagement in the College of Health and Human Development

Craig Newschaffer, Raymond E. and Erin Stuart Schultz Dean of the college, along with Dennis Shea, associate dean for undergraduate programs and outreach, and Megan Owens, assistant dean for student services and engagement, talk about student engagement in the college and the Henderson Building transformation project in Coffee with Craig.

Current Situation and Opportunity

The Center for Student Advising and Engagement (CSAE) is currently located on the ground floor of the historic Henderson Building, which is wonderfully situated on campus with the Old Main Lawn in front and the HUB Lawn at the rear.

However, the CSAE is based in poorly integrated and constrained square footage, lacking purpose-built spaces and an independent exterior entrance. This limits its ability to serve as the college's front door. Many other colleges across campus have modernized offices that represent student services, recruitment, advising, and engagement. Fortunately, circumstances have created an opportunity to change this for students in the college.
